We developed a symbolic model of belief for narrative planning, which allows characters to reason about each other's beliefs and intentions, including complex theory of mind (beliefs about beliefs about beliefs, etc.). This improves character believability in the generated stories, because it allows characters to make plans that include actions they anticipate others taking.
